How to Measure Your Space for a New Fridge

Buying a new refrigerator is exciting, but before making your purchase, it's essential to measure your space correctly. Ensuring the right fit will save you time, frustration, and potential returns. Here’s a step-by-step guide to measuring your space for a new fridge.

1. Measure the Width

Using a tape measure, determine the width of the space where your fridge will go. Measure at three points: the top, middle, and bottom, as walls and cabinets may not be perfectly straight. Use the smallest measurement to ensure a proper fit, and leave at least ½ inch of clearance on each side for ventilation. Also, consider how the doors will swing open—ensure there is enough room for full clearance without obstruction from walls, cabinets, or other appliances.

2. Measure the Height

Measure from the floor to the lowest point of any cabinets above the fridge space. Again, measure at multiple points to account for any variations. Leave at least ½ inch of clearance at the top for proper air circulation.

3. Measure the Depth

Measure from the back wall to the front edge of your counters. Refrigerators come in two main depth options: standard-depth and counter-depth. Standard-depth refrigerators are deeper and provide more storage space but may extend past your counters. Counter-depth models are shallower, aligning more closely with your cabinets for a built-in look. Leave at least 1 inch behind the fridge for air circulation.

4. Check Door Clearance and Swing

Make sure there’s enough space for the doors to open fully without hitting walls, cabinets, or other appliances. Measure the space in front of the fridge to ensure door clearance, especially for side-by-side or French-door models. If space is tight, consider a fridge with reversible doors or a model with sliding drawers for easier access.

5. Measure Doorways and Entry Paths

Before purchasing, measure your home’s doorways, hallways, and any tight corners the fridge will need to pass through during delivery. Compare these dimensions to the fridge’s shipping size to ensure a smooth installation.

Final Tips:

  • Always check the manufacturer’s recommended clearance space for ventilation.

  • Consider water line placement if purchasing a fridge with a water dispenser or ice maker.

  • Double-check all measurements before making your final decision.
